Community Garden
Four glorious organic acres dedicated to a vegetable garden and apple orchard! The garden is located on the grounds of Flood Brook Union School. Flood Brook Union School students, kids in The Collaborative’s Summer Camp and Extended Day Program and community members help design, plant, manage and harvest! Produce is shared with Londonderry’s food cupboard, Smith Haven residents and families of after school and summer camp.
We just planted some starters and the seedlings are coming in quick. This year the garden will include corn, beans, peas, salad greens, tomatoes, peppers, squash, melons, pumpkins, onions, carrots, broccoli, and flowers. The theme for the garden is Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. We are using egg cartons and newspaper cups for our seedling starters, which can be buried in the ground were they will decompose and nourish the soil. We are using old tires as a bed for the tomatoes and peppers, which helps these heat loving plants stay warm. We are in the process of planning and raising money for rain barrels to help us water the garden. Other plans include using the loose rocks to create garden beds and craft projects using odd and end materials- like using old CDs as art and bird deterrents. With the help of our volunteers- Deb Wade, Melissa Brown, and Kristen Kirch, and the help from the kids of The Collaborative’s Extended Day Program and Summer Camp, we expect the garden to be very successful this year.
