January is National Mentoring Month. The Collaborative has had a mentoring program for many years where many successful matches were made and maintained, creating lasting bonds and good memories. This year The Collaborative has 13 mentors who have been matched with youth from Flood Brook Union School. Mentors meet with their pair for one hour every week. Activities mentor pairs participate in are everything ranging from arts and crafts, cooking, building model airplanes, playing basketball, telling ghost stories, and just eating lunch together. However, the one hour of activities is more than just something to do. Mentors are building confidence, presenting new opportunities, providing a confidant, and many more things that, for the youth, will carry on into adulthood. Thank you to our mentors for you all that you do. If you are interested in mentoring please call Cara at 824-4200.

Good news! Look around and you’ll see throughout our community positive parenting happening every day. Positive parenting emphasizes what’s right with our youth and what good activities they are involved with. Positive parenting focuses on giving kids from their early years throughout their teen years tools, supports and values. The Search Institute refers to these as 40 Developmental Assets. The more assets a child or teens has, the more resilient, caring and healthy the youth may become. The more assets the youth has, the more likely the youth will be to make healthy choices. (http://www.search-institute.org)
What are these assets that our kids need to help survive the teen years and grow in to responsible and healthy adults? Following the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets some of the categories include Support (family support, positive communication and involvement with school), Boundaries and Expectations (clear family rules and consequences and positive adult role modeling), Positive Values and Identity (Young person accepts and takes personal responsibility and young person feels he or she has control over “things that happen to me”). How do you support your child at home and school? How does your child keep track of their extracurricular schedules, family obligations and school work? What positive role modeling behaviors do you exhibit around your child? How do you monitor your child’s whereabouts and activities when your child’s hanging out at their friend’s house? How does your child problem solve school and social issues?

The Collaborative is kicking off a positive parenting campaign. We are reaching out to parents, guardians and caring adults and asking what positive parenting works in your family? To share your ideas and join the conversation add or comments below or find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/thecollaborativeus. Share how you communicate, support and bestow positive values with your child and what positive parenting techniques you use with your kids. To start your thinking, a coalition in Maine shared these Positive Parenting Techniques!

Anyone that responds will have their name entered into a drawing to win 4 tickets to Village Picture Shows Cinema.
