RTU Kickoff at Riley Rink

On September 21st, The Collaborative welcomed over 250 youth, caring adults, and other interested folks from Northshire schools and mountain towns to Northshire Civic Center’s Riley Rink at Hunter Park for the kickoff of our popular RTU program.

RTU is a youth substance misuse prevention and asset building educational program that incentivizes the healthy choice of not using drugs and alcohol. Formerly known as Refuse to Use, the program has embraced a new identity that reflects its intention more accurately. The name change to Resilience Through Understanding signifies the program's commitment to empowering participants with tools to overcome challenges, build resilience and encourage acceptance and understanding.

When the doors opened, program participants and their caring adults had time to check in with school-based volunteer reps, view our extensive collection of prevention resources, and enter a raffle to win items from various local businesses. After a brief program overview by Programs Coordinator Natalie Philpot, attendees viewed the acclaimed documentary "Screenagers: Under the Influence."

The Kickoff is the first of 5 events that participants and their caring adults engage in between September and February. These events promote developmental assets and examine the intersection of mental health and various topics including technology, physical health, relationships, and substance misuse. In return for their efforts, participants are able to choose a season pass from Stratton Mountain, Magic Mountain, Viking Nordic Center, or Riley Rink at Hunter Park. Successful completion of the entire program can also earn participants a pass to the Dorset Theatre Festival.

There’s still time to register for the 2023-2024 RTU Program Year, and to make up Event 1 attendance. Learn more and register at thecollaborative.us/rtu or email rtu@thecollaborative.us.
